The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the overgrown garden as Leo unlocked the front door. He inhaled deeply, a long, slow breath that filled his lungs with the scent of honeysuckle and damp earth. His shoulders dropped slightly, and the corners of his mouth turned upward as he stepped inside. It was quiet, save for the rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway. He kicked off his shoes, the worn carpet cool beneath his bare feet.

He wandered through the familiar rooms, touching the smooth surface of the dining table, the worn armrest of his grandmother’s favorite chair. A soft smile played on his lips. This house held a lifetime of memories, and a comforting sense of belonging. He picked up the ceramic cat figurine his grandmother had always loved, turning it over in his hands.

“Well, old girl,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble. “Looks like we’re home.” He placed the cat on the mantelpiece, then strolled into the kitchen, already planning what to make for dinner. The possibilities felt simple and good.
